Carl’s Jr, the Nashville based burger franchise is offering CBD infused hamburgers in its Colorado location on April 20 – 4/20, which is the marijuana subculture’s unofficial holiday.
CBD is short for cannabidiol which is a chemical found in the cannabis plant. It’s purported to have health benefits but is confusing to citizens and the authorities, alike. It's a naturally substance that does not make a person high. It can almost be viewed as a muscle relaxant. Its calming effects are often used to relieve chronic pain, anxiety, inflammation, depression, insomnia, among other conditions.
The CBD element is confusing because it’s found alongside tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the chemical that has a psychoactive effect and the chemical that makes you high. Used in products like oils and edibles to impart a feeling of relaxation and calm. Unlike its cousin tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it's not psychoactive.
Thinking about investing in Carls Jr. franchise? Here's 4 things you should know:
CBD can be derived from Marijuana or Hemp. CBD that comes from Hemp is 100 percent legal in all states because it’s not a drug and does not affect the brain. However, if it comes from Marijuana and has trace amounts of THC, it’s illegal in any state that did not pass legislation yet.
Patty Trevino, senior VP of brand marketing for Carl’s, JR, was quoted on Fox Business news saying, “From our early introduction into plant-based options to bringing the rare indulgence of truffles to our menu with the new Bacon Truffle Angus Burger, our customers have come to expect innovative and unique menu offerings, and we’re thrilled to be the first quick service restaurant to be testing CBD infused options.” If the new option takes off, Ms. Travino said Carls Jr. will consider keeping the item on the menu in Colorado where the recreational Marijuana is legal.
With the specialty burger called the Rocky Mountain High, Patty Trevino, Senior Vice President, Brand Marketing at Carl’s Jr., said their restaurant becomes the first fast-food chain to dabble in CBD-infused products.
So, what is the significance of April 20th? According to urban myth, 420 was the code some California police used for someone smoking marijuana. In the 1970’s, the code morphed into the date 4/20 or April 20th, the day to celebrate weed and fight for it’s legalization. It seems that it’s working as smoking cannabis is slowly gaining legal status across the county.
If you want to try the first ever CBD fast food offering, head over to 4050 Colorado Blvd., beginning at 6:00am MT until the store closes for $4.20, while supplies last – which I have a feeling won’t be long.
