Fridays

The other day I called my local municipal sanitation department to arrange a special pick up for an old couch. It was a Monday. I received an outgoing message that said, “Call wait times are longer at the beginning of the week. For a shorter wait time, call back later in the week.”

I think everyone feels bright and refreshed on Mondays and Tuesdays and want to get work done and feel productive. Wednesdays are filled with busy work. Thursdays are do or die days because the week is almost out. Friday seems dreamy with full anticipation for the weekend.

I had a colleague who used to say, “Don’t wait until Wednesday; that’s the end of the week. Get your stuff done on Monday and Tuesdays.”

There’s the problem! Most professionals feel the same way. I’m persuaded that it starts with school. Was it not your first priority to make sure Fridays were off or at least a light day in college?

In my personal opinion, I have no data to back it up, but I feel that when big companies such as IBM and US Steel adopted dress-down Fridays back in the early 90’s. It sent a message implying Fridays don’t matter. It’s a play day. This trend was only exacerbated by tech companies whose CEO’s consider a Hoodie formal wear.

I decided a few years back that I will take advantage of this situation. While everyone is busy pounding the phones and trying to hoodwink the gatekeepers at the beginning of the week, I don’t do that. I use those days to plan and research my prospect. On Friday afternoons, I go in for the kill.

Who’s in the office on Friday afternoons? The leaders of organizations and owners. They actually pick up the phone because no one else is in the office. When they see a call come in at 4 pm on a Friday, they think, who the heck is working now? Let me see. They pick up the phone and, presto, I bypassed gatekeepers, and I’m on the line with a decision-maker! Friday afternoons are blue oceans. It’s wide open. No one else is swimming. The sharks are on their way to the Hamptons.
