Going through a franchise due diligence process is a journey. Not unlike any trip you’ve taken, there are lots of emotions. There is excitement because you’re getting away from your job, boss, commute, and everything you love about trading your valuable time for money. At the same time, there is a sense of anxiety surrounding travel. When I am getting ready to travel, I always ask my wife, “When are they going to come up with that Star Trek thing that beams you to your destination?” Once you’re at your destination, you may worry about what’s happening back home. Is the house safe? Is my mail being picked up by my neighbor? Interestingly, all of the emotions above are the same one experiences when investigating franchises.
If you have been on a cruise, you may have experienced becoming stressed about getting to the boat on time. Once you pull away from the dock, there is lots of excitement for the impending vacation. However, there is an eerie feeling for some people once the boat gets to the point where they cannot see the land. You are between home and the new destination. That exact emotion comes up in a franchise search.
The investigation takes about six to eight weeks. Many people get scared in the middle of the process. They are further from a job and closer to a business but still unclear about what the business will look like. Some may feel that they want to get back to safe harbor. In a franchise search, a safe harbor is a job. If you’re in that situation, I implore you to focus on the route ahead. Once you get to the port and settle in, you will feel like it is your home.
